An immersive Virtual Reality training for infection prevention with visualized germ transmission.

ViRTUE - Experience hand hygiene

We make germs visible

ViRTUE is a virtual reality training application for hand hygiene. During the training, you perform various actions in a simulated patient round.

By activating the germ view mode, you can see in real time, or at the end of the patient round, if and where you have transferred germs through your actions.

The training is easy to understand. During the patient round in VR, the user acts in a realistic hospital environment and experiences the effects of their actions first hand.

Features

Learn hand hygiene in 20 minutes

ViRTUE makes germ transmissions visible and reproducible.

With our training, you will gain more confidence in hand hygiene in no time.

The virtual patient visit

ViRTUE hand hygiene training takes place in a virtual patient room. Here, you can make mistakes without risk and then analyse them.

Practise when it is necessary to disinfect your hands to prevent the transmission of germs. Your actions include greeting patients, taking their body temperature, auscultating the heart and recording the measured values. Observe in real time or check at the end of a round whether germs have been transmitted.

Visualisation of germs & patient zones

ViRTUE registers every contact with environmental and patient germs and simulates how they are distributed.

You can choose whether the germs and indication zones are visible or invisible.

Measurable results

Replay

Using the replay function, you can review your own patient visit afterward. This allows you to  analyze critical moments in your workflow.

Monitoring

To maximize learning, a second person accompanies the user during the virtual visit. The second person sees on their screen what the user sees in VR, can control the training and interact with the user.

FAQ

Questions & answers

01. What is ViRTUE?

ViRTUE is a virtual reality training application for hand hygiene that offers a lifelike and interactive learning experience. Using a VR headset, you are immersed in a three-dimensional hospital environment and can practise correct hand hygiene during a virtual patient visit.

02. What are the benefits of ViRTUE?

ViRTUE allows you to perform repeated patient visits and observe the transmission of germs in real time. In our realistic virtual environment, you can see the effects of your actions without endangering the health of real patients.

With the replay function, ViRTUE gives you the opportunity to watch yourself after a patient visit. This allows you to analyze indication errors in detail and enhances your understanding of hand hygiene.

03. How does hand hygiene work in ViRTUE?

ViRTUE simulates three types of germs: environmental germs and one type of germ per patient. Our system allows the precise analysis of these germs.

Different types of germs can simultaneously exist on your virtual hands. You spread these germs every time you touch a surface.

Three disinfectant dispensers are available in the patient’s room to keep hands free of germs. The goal is to disinfect your hands at the right moments, such as after opening the room door, which may have environmental germs, and before starting the patient visit.

The germ view can be switched on and off.

04. What hardware do I need to run ViRTUE?
ViRTUE is a desktop VR application for Microsoft Windows.

Minimum system requirements

  • Operating System: Windows® 10 64-bit
  • Processor: Intel i5 5th Generation
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: GeForce GTX 1060 4GB or equivalent
  • Storage: 1 GB Hard Drive Space

VR headset

ViRTUE supports all VR headsets that are SteamVR compatible and have hand controllers (e.g. HTC Vive, Vive Pro, Valve Index, Meta Rift S, Meta Quest with Meta 1, 2, 3 and Pro using Quest Link or Air Link).
05. How can I test ViRTUE?

We can provide you with a demo version of ViRTUE upon request. You can install it on your own hardware and test it free of charge for 30 days.

To get to know ViRTUE and us personally, we invite you to try out the software in our office at Hohlstrasse 176 in Zurich (Switzerland). We would also be happy to visit you at your own premises for a demonstration of ViRTUE.
